Lambda Chapter History

On December 1, 1990, eight women were activated as the Lambda Chapter. These women were Mary Kimball, Bridget Cassey, Lorrinda Fallini, Heather Fields, Anita Lopez, Suzanne Nugent, Elizabeth Williams and Toya Williams. This group of women activated an Alpha Class, but due to unknown circumstances, the organization fell apart and the charter was revoked. In October of 1997, research on Sigma Alpha had begun. Lorrell Kenney contacted Brandi McGinnis, National Board President, and the dream of recreating the Lambda chapter became a reality.

The first meeting was held on January 13th, and officer elections occurred a week later on January 20th. The executive committee was comprised of Lorrell Kenney-President, Stacy Pettigrew-Vice President, Christine Aguiar-Secretary, and Nicole Gibison-Treasurer. The group was recognized as a Sorority in Development (SID) on January 30th. Approximately eight months later, on October 10th, 1998, nineteen women were activated as the charter members of the reestablished Lambda Chapter.

Alumni Chapter History

On May 7, 2000, five Lambda chapter alumni: Christine Aguiar, Shannon Angle, Lorrell Kenney, Allison Mattingly and Stacy Pettigrew came together to begin the process of establishing a Sigma Alpha alumni chapter for the Lambda chapter. At this first organizational meeting, the group elected officers, established dues and began working on bylaws for the chapter. Over the next two months, the group generated support and participation of other Lambda alumni to build the group into an alumni chapter. Upon the completion of chapter bylaws, on June 30, 2000, a letter of petition for recognition as an alumni chapter of Sigma Alpha was submitted to the National Alumni Association. On July 15, 2000, the UC Davis Sigma Alpha Alumni chapter was chartered with nine members.

The first Annual meeting was held on April 21, 2001. At this meeting, the major focus was member recruitment and alumni/active relations. The chapter set goals to reach out to all alumni of the Lambda chapter and to recognize and welcome graduating seniors to join. The membership also discussed alumni chapter outreach to the Lambda chapter and established an annual BBQ for all actives and alumni, to be conducted each year on the Sunday following Picnic Day. Over the years, the Alumni chapter has grown to 11 members.

We have been able to provide contributions and support to the active chapter through Sisterhood workshops, sponsorship of regional meetings, sending active sisters to National Convention.
